surrounded by the green hilly landscape and with a view as far as the sea.
On a hilltop in the northern part of the Cilento - not far from the ancient Greek places of cultural interest at Paestum - lies the tranquil, medieval mountain village of Torchiara. Amongst others excellent wine, e.g. the Casebianche wine, is grown on the slopes facing the sea.
Torchiara was founded around the year 1000, when many inhabitants left their homes in the coastal area in fear of the Saracens and their raids and sought refuge in the surrounding mountains.
The medieval village center with its narrow alleys is grouped around Palazzo Torre, the landmark of the village, and Palazzo Pavone.
Conveniently located, Torchiara is an ideal starting point for excursions to important places of cultural interest in southern Italy, to the Cilento National Park and to the nearby sandy beaches of St. Maria di Castellabate and Agropoli.
Worthwhile destinations: Paestum, Castellabate, Agropoli, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, the grotto of Pertosa, the Carthusian monastery of Padula.
Nearest train station: Agropoli.
