In very idyllic, solitary location above the mountain village of Vibonati, Lisa, native from Tyrol, and Amedeo, a genuine Neapolitan, have realized their dream of living between mountains and sea and in the midst of untouched, spectacular nature.
Their gorgeous country house with quarry stone façade was built according to strictly sustainable principles and with natural materials. It offers a wonderful, unobstructed view across a wide green valley as far as the Gulf of Policastro.
Part of the concept right from the start was to 'share' "Il Sughero" and the rural-autonomous way of life with guests from all over the world. They can now stay at two guest rooms for up to 4 persons each and located next to each other in the annex.
The rooms open onto the 100 m², partly roofed terrace, which runs the length of the house. As a guest you are sure to find a spot to retreat to, relax in the hammock, enjoy the view of the Gulf of Policastro. Part of the large terrace is furnished with tables and chairs. That is where breakfast and, upon prior reservation, dinner are served.
The guest rooms are identical in design/lay-out: ca. 20 m² in size; untreated, natural wood furniture; a double bed with single bunk above; enough space for an extra bed; bathroom with shower cabin/WC/bidet, homemade natural soaps and hair dryer; fly screens. A family with two (small) children might find them perfect for their vacation far from tourist crowds and today's fast pace of life. Free WLAN is, however, available at Il Sughero.
Il Sughero offers a magnificent landscape and what you might wish for on a small farm. A lush fruit and vegetable garden provides the ingredients for breakfast and for the couple's home restaurant. In the garden open to the guests they grow above all ancient local kinds of fruit and vegetables, also to save them from vanishing altogether.
What might be fun for and appeal to young guests: The Agriturismo's rambling premises are home to goats, ducks and chicken as well as two family dogs and a few playful cats.
The couple's home restaurant is open to both guests of their estate and visitors from outside. Cooking is done in their large eat-in kitchen and upon prior reservation. Dinner, two courses and a dolce, is usually served on the large panorama terrace. The ingredients for the dishes are mainly home-made and home-grown. Upon request, vegan and gluten-free dishes are also prepared.
The pizza oven is of course fired up, too. For Amedeo as a native Neapolitan it is a matter of course to put a real southern Italian pizza on his menu. The bread you are served for breakfast, together with home-made jam, goat’s cheese and local honey, is also baked in the wood-fired oven.
For hikers, Il Sughero is very conveniently located in the Cilento National Park. Italy’s largest National Park Pollino and the lesser known protected area Val d’Agri near Potenza (Basilicata) are also merely a stone’s throw off.
From Il Sughero you can start on short hiking tours to medieval Vibonati and through the pine woods of Santa Lucia. A short drive by car takes you to more hiking and loop trails, such as "Grotte del Bussento" near Morigerati, the seaside panorama trail at marine nature park Infreschi between Marina di Camerota and Scario and Monte Bulgheria near Scario. Another charming hiking tour takes you along the ancient road from Sapri to Acquafredda in the neighboring Basilicata region.
Lisa and Amedeo provide you with GPS data for the various trekking and bike trails, so enjoy your (active) holidays in the Cilento and its neighboring regions. Should your feet need a day of rest, stop and relax at the sandy beach of Villammare 7 km off. You might also stop by the fascinating, black beach bays of Maratea in the Basilicata region.
