Slow food, Dieta Mediterranea & innovative agriculture

As small farms and agriculture are still strongly characteristic for the Cilento nowadays, it has quite a lot to offer from a culinary point of view. Cultivation and processing of regional products are based mainly on old local traditions.

In the course of the last 15 years, above all, these traditions have brought about countless innovations. Modern (organic) enterprises rely on their very own and high-quality ways of processing typically Cilentan products.

Some of the delicacies the Cilento offers are also registered as Slow Food products (Presidio Slow Food), for example and to name only a few, the "alici di Menaica", the so called Soppressata di Gioi, the olives "Salella Ammaccate" and 'cacioricotta', the savory goat’s cheese.

"Dieta Mediterranea"

Mediterranean diet/cuisine, in Italian "Dieta Mediterranea", is light and wholesome and it is closely connected with the Slow Food movement. And that is what the culinary particularity of the Cilento rests on.

It is based on fresh and exclusively regional ingredients. A lot of fish, vegetables, fruit, olive oil extra vergine, some cheese and a glass of wine once in a while – that's what it was like then and what it is still like now, the dietary pattern of the Cilentani.

And it caught the attention of the American dietician Ancel Keys. During his first visit to the region, he was fascinated, amongst others, by the extraordinarily old age of the Cilentani. Later he moved to Pioppi, where he spent many years concentrating on his studies of the "Dieta Mediterranea".
