Rocca Cilento, founded around 1100 AD, is the place of origin and the eponym of the Cilento area.
Due to its strategically important location, Rocca Cilento with its "castello medioevale", the medieval castle, was the administrative centre of the House of Sanseverino up to the mid 16th century. The castle with its five round towers and bastion protected the aristocratic residence. The castle counts among the most impressive fortifications in the Cilento.
The time-honoured church of Rocca Cilento is also worth a visit.
From the village, you can easily reach numerous interesting hiking trails, for example, "Valle dei Mulini", "Valle dei Monaci" or "Valle del Monte Stella".
On Monte Stella, with its 1,130 metres the highest elevation of the western part of the Cilento, you hike directly along the mountain crest; from there, you can admire the Cilento hinterland as well as the coastal landscape and the vast sea.
