Our guests - 2004

Here you find tips and experiences from our Cilento-travellers' feedback in 2004. Of course we would be glad to receive your comments and pictures as well!

"The ristorante 'La Cantina del Marchese' in Marina di Camerota is an experience, and one can also wonderfully buy cheese, salami, ham, oil etc. and eat it at home. Additionally, one can bring a bottle and have it filled directly from the barrel with delicious wine." The picture shows Marina di Camerota at night (M. and M. Schwatz, Villino Troccoli, September 2004)

Carthusian monastery in Padula

"Our most beautiful excursion led us across the mountains to the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula. You cannot have more Cilento landscape, and the Certosa is stunning. (…) Everything worked just fine. Pasquale Cutri is a very kind and helpful person! (…) Seldom have felt as comfortable as here (…)."
B. Heller, Casa Aniello, September/October 2004

"On the spacious and roofed terrace we were able to indulge in total tranquillity into the “dolce far niente”, accompanied by the autumnal roar of the sea with its constantly changing play of colours, every once in a while interrupted by a train passing below, which did not bother us. Directly above the sea this small jewel called “Casa Ester” is located, lovingly furnished and cared for by Franco, who stayed on the upper floor on the weekends and kindly surprised us with tips, vino, olio and grilled melanzane. During the day there were countless possibilities for excursions, thus we had to reduce them to only a few in number: by train to Naples, Paestum and Pompeii. For that reason we will surely return and will once again enjoy the impressive sunsets" (L. and M. Homering, Casa Ester, September/October 2004)

"The Ristorante ‘Incontro’ in Scario (see picture) at the harbour is absolutely a recommendation!!! The meals are superbly delicious and fresh, especially the fish and frutti di mare dishes!" (A. and H. Klukkert, Villa Niky, September 2004)

""(...) Hotel and reception superb. Right after unpacking we went on a discovery tour through Marina di Camerota and the surrounding area. Soon we also had found our bathing beach near the Palinuro Cape, a lot of space and wonderful water. After several days of calmness, we were off to the environs, the old Camerota, San Severino, Paestum, Vellia and Vesuvius. Altogether we have spent a marvellous holiday in a still relatively wild and untouched landscape without the usual mass tourism. Now we are looking forward to May next year, when we will be in Marina di Camerota again (…)" (G. and E. Giesel, Hotel Calanca, September 2004)

Hotel Calypso

"Special and unique is the laid-back, friendly atmosphere in the hotel, and responsible for it are the proprietors Roberto and Gabriella. Gabriella prepares with much love and care the most delicious dishes (…), for examples the best parmigiana in the world (I was given the recipe by Gabriella and have frequently cooked it to the delight of the entire family), and each day we were looking forward to wonderful, always new, surprising lunch and dinner menus. With it, Roberto serves the best wines of the area (which we have also found in high-class restaurants in Munich) at a very reasonable price. Roberto has anticipated our every wish. So he has served unforgettable banquets in the garden with torchlight and full-moon lighting, musically accompanied by the roar of the sea. In the Hotel Calypso one is cooked for and indulged just like being at a good friend’s place. It is surely a wonderful place to relax, and feast and be spoiled, also in late autumn, and additionally there is the density of cultural highlights (like the excavations of Paestum). We will return, as soon as possible for us (…)."

Exceeded the boldest expectations

"Even if we have returned from the trip a while ago already, today I would finally like to assure you that your holiday offer (Marina di Camerota, Villa Zincalo) has exceeded our boldest expectations. We felt superbly comfortable and thank you for the really excellent selection. We will recommend both you and the Cilento (…)."

"We made day trips to Capri and Pompeii, went to the ghost towns of San Severino and Rocigno Vecchio, visited Paestum, Velia and the maritime museum in Pioppi, made a grotto boat trip around the Capo Palinuro and a Lamparata (amazing, arranged by the Cooperativa Cilento Mare), visited the grotto of Castelcivita (see picture!) and of San Michele Arcangelo and explored the area around Scario. Unfortunately, 14 days are too short to see everything. We did not really get to know the natural park and many other villages and towns, but this we are surely going to catch up on (…)." „First of all I would like to thank you for your excellent service with our booking of Il Fortino at Palinuro in Italy this summer. Our family really had the very best holiday ever. The Villa and the Cilento region was incredibly beautiful and we all want to go back, perhaps even next year (...)" (family Allard, Villa Il Fortino, July 2004)

A special experience for A. Roth, here in the medieval village of San Severino, was a “regional festival on the piazza of Marina di Camerota”. He and his wife especially enjoyed the “grottoes, Padula, the landscape with bathing bays and a lot of tranquillity.” (A. Roth, Villino Troccoli, June 2004)

"We spent unforgettably beautiful days in June in Hotel Illicini. The location belongs to the most beautiful spots in Italy that we have ever spent our holidays at! We were cared for especially well by Luciana during the day, and Juliano at night, feeling comfortable all the way. Here, everything was right, a naturlaub holiday at its best! Fantastic location, a landscape almost not to be beat in its beauty, and perfect service!” (P. Breuer/H.-J. Schütze, Hotel Illicini, June 2004)

Cilento tips

“Visit the hinterland! A wonderful day trip (e.g. on a Sunday):
1) The beautiful weekly market in Vallo della Lucania. It is mandatory to visit the fruit and vegetable hall and be amazed.
2) From the Vallo to Monte Sacro (1.700 m). Wonderful drive – great panorama. One thinks to be in the Alps. Goats and cow flocks with bells running around freely.
3) Gole del Calore / Gorge of Calore: fantastic landscape and a refreshing bath; wading in the crystal clear, cold water (essential taking swimming costumes with you). A recommendation: Try the restaurant at the WWF refuge -> wild boar from the grill -> delicious and cheap.”
A. Hinrichs, June/July 2004, Villa Cosenza

Hospitality

As for the Cilento: “A very beautiful spot; more hospitable than other Italian regions; clean sea.” Concerning the accommodation: “Just great – a structure lovingly designed and cared for.” A special holiday event for Mrs. Rolzhäuser was the “buffalo farm ‘Tenuta Vannulo’ with biological buffalo milk ice cream, yoghurt etc.”.
Chr. Rolzhäuser, Villa Torre delle Viole, June/July 2004

“(…) it was just “bellissimo”, especially the tranquillity, the clean sea, the wonderful mountainside. We belong to the kind of people who can write many positive things about the region…on the other hand we actually do not want that more tourists will go there, since this exactly is responsible for the magic: the tranquillity, the incomparable taste of fresh, grilled fish (directly from the fishermen), the salt in the air and on the skin, the smell of the sea and of all the wonderful plants and herbs, and especially the simple, undisturbed life. A special recommendation is the restaurant “Cantina del Marchese” in Marina di Camerota, with the local cuisine including many Cilentanian specialties in a wonderful atmosphere. What would the Cilento be without its famous buffalo mozzarella, and limoncello (lemon liqueur)? (…) Only for people who love and appreciate all this is this area the proper holiday resort. We will surely return, to enjoy all this once again.” (A. and L. Watzl, Villa Torre delle Viole, May/June 2004)

“Because everything is there: nature, culture, mountains, water, tranquillity, ‘adventure’…” K. Hähnel can very well imagine coming back to the Cilento. The picture shows Porta Rosa at the excavation site of the ancient Greek town of Velia (Casa Nido, April 2004)
