Picturesquely on a hilltop
On the coastal road from Palinuro to Velia, the medieval village of Pisciotta is picturesquely situated on a hill above the Mediterranean Sea. In the narrow alleys and stairways with their palazzi and houses dating from the 16th century, you will experience the unique flair of real Italian village life.
In spite of its closeness to the sea, it is far from being overrun by tourists, customs and traditions which are hundreds of years old are preserved and kept alive.
The medieval alleys of Pisciotta are off limits to cars and motorcycles, but there are sufficient possibilities for parking around the centre.
In the village piazza, you will find grocery stores and bars. A cash dispenser and the post office are also nearby. To be recommended, is the Ristorante e Pizzeria "Tre Gufi" ("Three Tawny Owls"), which offers a splendid view of the sea from its terrace at the foot of the grand palazzo, the highest point of the village (… the pizza is superb!).
Beaches at Marina di Pisciotta and Pisciotta-Caprioli
In order to reach the beach of Marina di Pisciotta, you can use a footpath (1 km) or the road (3 km). The beautiful beach has either more sandy or more pebbly sections depending on the current. It is towards the evening that the atmosphere is simply charming: To one side of the beach lies the picturesque village, to the other lies the hilly landscape of the Cilento with its gentle green giants sloping towards the sea.
Alternatively, you can take a 3 km ride to the wide and fine sandy beach of Saline (5 km long) near Pisciotta-Caprioli – ideal not only for bathing, but also for building sandcastles and for taking long walks towards Cape Palinuro.
At the weekly market taking place every Wednesday in the piazza, the displays are as colourful as the people coming from the neighbouring villages. Countrywomen from the hinterland offer their goods for sale, at the stall "salumi e fromaggi" a chat is included in the price, kitchen towels, aprons and the typical "caffettiere" are offered as well. Enjoy this unique atmosphere while having a "caffè" and a "cornetto" at one of the bars in the piazza!
From the town, you can undertake several beautiful hiking tours.
