At the seaside between Acciaroli and Ascea, in the middle of the Cilento National Park, lies the small, picturesque bathing resort of Pioppi. Old mansions, a beautiful piazza, cosy cafés and pizzerias invite you to linger.
Those who want to get to know typical Cilento cuisine are in the right place here. The origin of the famous “Dieta Mediterranea”, which fascinated the American dietician Acel Keys in the 1960s, lies in this area.
At the “Museo del Mare”, the various maritime ecosystems of the Cilento coast are presented in several aquaria. You will also find illustrations of the area’s traditional methods of fishing, alici di menaica. The display façade facing the sea is particularly worth seeing. The museum’s exterior façade, however, is impressive, too – it is to be found in stately Palazzo Vinciprova dating from the 17th century.
On summer evenings from the end of July to the end of August, you can attend „Pioppi di Scena“. Contemporary theatre performances take place in front of Palazzo Vinciprova,
However, you can also enjoy the sea while walking along the promenade lined by palm trees.
Active holidays & Connections
From Pioppi, you can go on beautiful hiking tours.
Mention for best quality
„Guida Blu“ is published in Italy annually.
Mention in this travel guide of holiday resorts concerned for their environment is accorded to those places which combine excellent service for guests with respect for the environment in an active way. Preconditions for being mentioned include not only clean beaches and water quality, but also waste management, air quality, esteem for historic town centres, promotion of regional produce as well as local gastronomy and, finally, responsible area planning [landscape architecture]. The guide is sponsored and edited by the Italian environmental organization Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano.
In 2011, Pioppi was among the places to be awarded this mention for highest quality. A list of all the places commended is to be found on the site of Legambiente, where you can also order „Guida Blu“ online.
Ideally located, Pioppi is an excellent starting point for exploring the wider surroundings, e.g. the Amalfi coast, Salerno, Naples. Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum.
The nearest train stations are Ascea and Vallo della Lucania.
